Meet Our Wine People
Tassie's wine folk are a diverse bunch but share a few things in common – they're proudly doing things their own way, are aways up for a challenge and especially thrive when they're told that it can’t be done.
Moores Hill
Young and energetic couple, James and Constance, decided to move from the Yarra Valley to take over Moores Hill, Tasmania’s first off grid winery. Their goal is to build on the existing sustainability ethos and improve the vineyard by implementing regenerative agricultural practices.
Apogee Tasmania
Pioneering Tasmanian winemaker Andrew Pirie chose a distinguished site for his two-hectare sustainable vineyard named APOGEE – the culmination of his career. Here he handcrafts renowned prestige sparkling cuvées, single vineyard wines expressing the exceptional terroir of the site. APOGEE is also heralded for its top tier Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Memories are made here …
Clover Hill Wines
Robert has worked vintages across the globe, from Bordeaux to Napa, but it’s here in Tassie that he’s most comfortable to bend the rulebook until it breaks. Here, he produces sparkling wine solely in méthode-traditionnelle and doggedly pursues our new multivintage philosophy.
Stoney Rise | Holyman
Dynamic duo Joe and Lou Holyman have been making wine from their Tamar Valley vineyard for 20 years. Joe makes the wine but secretly prefers to work in the vineyard, while Lou hangs out in the snazzy wine bar-esque tasting room, serving up great vino and delicious food.
Josef Chromy Wines
Originally from South Africa, it was a rugby scholarship that got Ockie into a winemaking qualification. Sure, he sidelined it to play pro rugby, but once wine is in the blood, it takes more than a few knocks to get it out!
House of Arras
Over the past 30 years, Ed Carr has led the House of Arras in becoming the most awarded sparkling in Australia with a single-minded approach to crafting exceptional sparkling wine that speaks to Tasmania's cool climate, ancient soils and is equal to the world’s best.
Small Wonder Wines
The hands-on nature and seasonality of winemaking is a great way to combine Andrew’s passion in art, science, food, and wine. We aim to produce thoughtful and expressive wines that reflect Small Wonder’s unique location in the Tamar Valley.
Puddleduck
Darren Brown started in the Tasmanian wine industry in 1985 when there were only eight main players. He is now the owner and winemaker at Puddleduck Vineyard – Tassie’s much loved family vineyard voted best winery in Hobart four years running. We are very proud of the fact that we have not used an insecticide on the vines for over one and a half decades due the help of our feathered friends, namely ducks and Guinea fowl.
When we talk about people in the wine industry, we simply can’t forget all those behind the scenes. At Ghost Rock, every member plays such a crucial role in shaping the overall experience. From the vineyard
team to the winemakers, each contribute to the quality and uniqueness of a wine. Hospitality people and administrative staff enhance the customer experience by sharing their knowledge and passion too.
Grey Sands
Bob’s family were teetotallers and he ‘learned’ to drink spirits and beer at university. There he met Rita, whose family were Italian and regularly shared wine with meals. Bob fell in love with all things wine and just had to set up a cool climate vineyard in Tasmania. That was in 1987 and today Grey Sands continues to produce their famous range of wines – pre-cellared and ready to enjoy.
