For the most part, this love for Tasmania is brought together by those who proudly champion the island’s culinary wares – carefully sourcing, preparing and then generously sharing with their guests. Their taste is impeccable and their finesse for the perfect nuanced pairing is undeniable. Together, the experience that they offer is truly something else.
We present to you Tasmania’s champions of 2023 – the best places to enjoy Tasmanian wine (and food, which comes highly recommended) in all its glory.
Grain of the Silos
89 Lindsay St, Invermay TAS 7248
2023 Judges’ Choice Tasmanian Wine List of the Year
Winner of the 2023 Judges’ Choice Tasmanian Wine List of the Year, the team at Launceston’s Grain of the Silos firmly believe that an outstanding dining experience should be foremost a celebration of local wine and produce. Thus, the venue has devoted its philosophy to sourcing and showcasing the best of what Tasmania has to offer.
Grain of the Silos is a venue led by chef Massimo Mele (a claim to fame shared with Highly Commended recipient Peppina, located at the other end of the island). At home in Peppers Silo Hotel, which is a repurposed 1960s grain silo complex, the inviting yet sophisticated experience at Grain of the Silos is worthy of staying a while.
Similarly to the food on offer, the wine list reflects the diversity found in the island’s wine growing areas and is served by a front of house team that are proud and enthusiastic to share the makers’ creations. From cool-climate Pinot Noirs to a crisp Riesling and everything beaming in between – this marvellous island of Tasmania has been scoured for perennial favourites and seasonal produce to take the lead on a carefully curated menu.
We don’t tend to play favourites in Tassie, but …
A neighbour in the Tamar Valley, Swinging Gate Vineyard’s wines are a favourite on the list at Grain of the Silos;
“Through minimal intervention, science and passion, the makers also have a huge respect for the land and create wines that are honest and made by nature.”

Stanley Wine Bar
2 Church St, Stanley TAS 7331
2023 Judges’ Choice Tasmanian Small Wine Bar List of the Year
With 30 seats and found in a town of scarcely 500, receiving the award for People’s Choice Wine List of the Year would indicate an affection far beyond its (slightly remote, but incredibly beautiful) location. Not only a crowd favourite, Stanley Wine Bar was also awarded the Judges’ Choice Tasmanian Small Wine Bar List of the Year.
In the village of the same name, you’ll find the Stanley Wine Bar, a charmingly restored Victorian cottage in heart of the North West coast. Its offering focuses on Tasmanian wines and spirits served alongside a love for history which seamlessly connects past and present in a fashion that is far from ordinary.
The décor features an eclectic mix of upcycled, recycled or repurposed materials and furnishings combined to create a warm and welcoming environment. In every way the venue reflects a notable attention to detail, from the wine selection on offer to the stories shared by its host. Mike has an abundant passion for the island’s producers, with a few small and lesser-known gems to be found in the collection.
